Spurs on a rampage as red mist descends on Liverpool
LIVERPOOL had two players sent off in a 0-4 English Premier League trouncing at Tottenham Hotspur yesterday as its early season optimism evaporated in a woeful performance.
Luka Modric's superb shot gave Tottenham the early lead at White Hart Lane and the hosts sealed the points after the break with goals from new strike partnership Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor after Liverpool had been reduced to nine men.
Former Arsenal striker Adebayor then endeared himself to the Spurs fans with a second goal in stoppage time to condemn Liverpool to its biggest Premier League defeat for 8-1/2 years.
Charlie Adam was the first man to see red for the visitors after 28 minutes for a mis-timed tackle on midfielder Scott Parker which resulted in a second booking, while Martin Skrtel went in the 63rd for a clumsy foul on Gareth Bale.
Tottenham's second victory of the season, after it lost its opening two matches, lifted it to 11th place with six points. Liverpool is eighth with seven points after a second successive league defeat.
Later, leader Manchester United was hosting Chelsea while Manchester City, which like United has maximum points from its opening four games, was away to Fulham and Sunderland was hosting Stoke City.
On Saturday, Arsenal crashed to a 3-4 defeat against Blackburn Rovers despite leading the game twice in the first half, while all three promoted clubs had wins on the same day for the first time since February 2007.
Romped past
Swansea romped past West Bromwich Albion with goals from Scott Sinclair, Leroy Lita and Nathan Dyer, while Joey Barton, Alejandro Faurlin and D J Campbell gave Queens Park Rangers a 3-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Norwich completed the trio of victories for the promoted clubs, Anthony Pilkington and Bradley Johnson getting first-half goals in a 2-1 win at Bolton Wanderers. Martin Petrov cut the deficit with a 64th-minute penalty.
Elsewhere, it was: Aston Villa 1, Newcastle United 1; and Everton 3, Wigan Athletic 1.
In Italy, Alessandro Matri scored early in the second half to give Juventus a 1-0 win at Siena, its second straight Serie A win of the season, yesterday.
Udinese joined Juventus on six points when it beat Fiorentina 2-0 with Antonio di Natale, last season's top scorer, opening the scoring and Chile midfielder Mauricio Isla also on target.
Cagliari, 2-1 winner over Novara on Saturday, also has the maximum six points.
Sebastian Giovinco scored twice and was sent off in Parma's 2-1 win over Chievo Verona, while Genoa won 2-1 at Lazio.
Atalanta beat Palermo 1-0 in a match which was interrupted by torrential rain for more than half an hour in the second half.
Atalanta, which was penalized six points for its role in a betting and match-fixing scandal, has minus two points after drawing 2-2 at Genoa in its opener last week.
Palermo, which opened with a 4-3 win over Inter Milan, remained on three points. On Saturday, Inter and AS Roma drew 0-0.
