Spurs rally to shock Arsenal

TOTTENHAM Hotspur scored with five minutes left yesterday to beat Arsenal 3-2 in the English Premier League for a first away win at its fierce north London rival in 17 years.

Spurs had trailed 0-2 to goals by Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh but Gareth Bale reduced the deficit five minutes after halftime and Rafael van der Vaart finally scored away from home with a 67th-minute penalty that Cesc Fabregas conceded when he needlessly blocked the Dutchman's free kick with his forearm at the Emirates.

Arsenal still had chances to win the game through Fabregas and Laurent Koscielny but Younes Kaboul headed in a free kick to complete the comeback.

The win denied Arsenal the chance to go top of the Premier League and ended the visitors' 68-match run without an away win against the established powers of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Arsenal stayed on 26 points from 14 games, two points behind leader Chelsea which was playing at Birmingham City. Third-placed Manchester United, which has 25 points, was at home to Wigan Athletic.

The comeback had looked impossible when Arsenal dominated the first half comprehensively, with Alex Song, Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and Fabregas combining so fluidly in midfield that one of them always seemed free to collect a pass.

Tottenham's halftime introduction of striker Jermain Defoe for his first appearance in more than two months following an ankle injury changed that, evening the balance of play by keeping Arsenal's defense busier and denying the Gunners so much time to build moves from the back.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins says he was unfairly dismissed by the Premier League champion and has turned to the League Manager's Association for legal advice.

Carlo Ancelotti's former assistant left Stamford Bridge on November 11 after being told his contract would not be renewed but Wilkins is unhappy with the way he was treated.

"I am very disappointed that the board decided that I had no further contribution to make at Chelsea Football Club which has played such a huge part in my life," Wilkins said in a statement issued by the LMA.

"The LMA's legal advisers are assisting me in obtaining answers to a number of questions arising from my undoubtedly unfair dismissal, and all efforts are being made to reach an amicable solution."

Chelsea responded with a statement saying the club was happy to negotiate with Wilkins' representatives.
