Spurs suffer shock HK loss

CHAN Siu-ki scored from long range and captain Li Haiqiang converted a penalty as Hong Kong's South China upset Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in a preseason friendly yesterday.

Chan turned around and fired instantly after a throw-in, lobbing the ball over a surprised Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes in the 52nd minute.

South China was then awarded a penalty after Jake Livermore tackled Chao Pengfei inside the area, and Li doubled the lead for the home side.

The English Premier League side wasted a number of chances, as striker Robbie Keane hit the post in the 61st and Roman Pavlyuchenko's shot from just outside the area in the 66th was denied by goalkeeper Zhang Chunhui.

Zhang also saved back-to-back attempts by Pavlyuchenko and winger Aaron Lennon.

Playing in hot and humid conditions, with temperatures reaching 32 degrees Celsius, both teams got off to a sluggish start.

In the first leg of its preseason Asian tour, Tottenham beat West Ham United 1-0 and Hull City 3-0 in Beijing earlier last week to win the Premier League Asia Cup.

A brief silence for late England manager Bobby Robson was observed before the game.
