Spurs triumph to leapfrog Blues

RYAN Mason scored a late winner and was then carried off on a stretcher as Tottenham Hotspur celebrated its first English Premier League victory of the season at Sunderland yesterday.

Mason’s 82nd-minute dinked goal, with Erik Lamela slipping the ball through to him, broke the goalless deadlock and provided a rare burst of brilliance in an otherwise uninspired encounter at the Stadium of Light.

The midfielder then collided with Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon and was substituted, but manager Mauricio Pochettino said it did not appear to be a serious injury.

“The goal showed how we tried to play and what our philosophy is,” the Spurs manager told Sky Sports.

“It was fantastic, but unlucky for him because he got a big knock on his knee. But we hope it is not a big issue.”

After a defeat and three draws in Spurs’ first four games, it was a win that had taken its time in coming and Pochettino voiced optimism that it would be a sign of things to come.

“It’s another clean sheet, the first victory of the league after five games, and now we can move on. This will help us with our confidence for the next games,” said the Argentinian.

The 1-0 win lifted Spurs to 12th in the table and dropped champion Chelsea, beaten 1-3 at Everton on Saturday, down to 17th and in danger of falling into the bottom three when Newcastle United plays at West Ham United today.

Dick Advocaat’s Sunderland, still searching for its first win after five games, drops to the bottom, behind Stoke City on goal difference.

Leicester City was hosting Midlands rival Aston Villa later, when victory for Claudio Ranieri’s side would lift the Foxes up to second place in the table.

Leader Manchester City is currently five points clear after snatching a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

City produced a 90th-minute winner to beat Palace and secure a fifth consecutive victory from as many matches, while champion Chelsea slumped at Everton that sealed its worst start in the Premier League.

To round off a miserable day for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, there were victories for two other title hopefuls.

Manchester United moved up to second after 19-year-old French striker Anthony Martial scored a debut goal in a 3-1 home win over Liverpool and Arsenal beat Stoke 2-0.

Martial, whose fee from Monaco could rise to 80 million euros (US$90 million), was not the only teenager to make headlines.

City’s 18-year-old Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench in the 89th and poked the ball for goal a minute later. The Nigerian forward played competitively for City only once before, and that, too, was as an 89th-minute substitute, against Watford in August.
