Spurs visit Gunners in FA Cup
England’s frenetic festive period gives way to the romance of the FA Cup this weekend, with Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to north London rivals Arsenal the pick of the third-round ties.
Paul Lambert, manager of seven-time winners Aston Villa, says the majority of English Premier League clubs would prefer not to have the distraction of playing in the FA Cup. “I think if you asked the majority of them, if they were being honest, they probably would do,” Lambert told BBC ahead of today’s third-round tie at home to Sheffield United. “Not just because of the money but survival in the league is vital.
“It is realistic. That is the nature of it,” the manager added.
Manchester United will once again look to the cups for consolation when they host Swansea City, while Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City will all be seeking to avoid embarrassment at the hands of lower-league teams.
It is now nine years since Arsenal beat United on penalties in the 2005 FA Cup final to claim its last piece of silverware, however as English Premier League leaders their star is in the ascendant once again.
