Star-studded Uruguay hits 4 past China

CHINA suffered a 0-4 defeat at the hands of World Cup semifinalists Uruguay in an international friendly in Wuhan yesterday.

It was the biggest margin of defeat for Chinese coach Gao Hongbo since he took charge in May 2009.

With a lineup that included its World Cup stars Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, Uruguay dominated much of the match and fired shots with ease at the Chinese keeper. The hosts could only rely on counterattacks and freekicks in their attempt to stop the South Americans.

But it was not until the 70th minute that Suares opened the floodgates when he forced Chinese defender Feng Xiaoting to net an own goal. Cavani doubled the advantage nine minutes later with a long-range strike while Gabriel Rodriguez and Bruno Fernandez added two more to seal an easy victory.

Captain Diego Lugano missed two great chances in the first half, both from Forlan's intriguing set-pieces. The defender headed Forlan's corner high over the bar before he drove wide a wicked low cross from Suarez on Forlan's through ball. Cavani and Maximiliano Pereira had several long-range efforts saved by in-form keeper Zeng Cheng.

For China, speedy Feng Renliang had two forays down the left that tested the visitors' defence before Shalke 04 player Hao Junmin bent a tricky freekick which was parried by Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera.

In Seoul, South Korea and Japan fought out a 0-0 draw in a blood-and-thunder friendly lacking only goals to mark a pulsating clash between the Asian rivals.

Japan, which stunned Argentina 1-0 last week in its first match under Italian coach Alberto Zaccheroni, pushed South Korea hard in the first half.

Midfielder Keisuke Honda went close with two long-range efforts and Park Chu-young shaved the bar with a brave header for the Koreans, watched from the bench by injured talisman Park Ji-sung.

Park Chu-young forced a decent save from Japan goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa in the 63rd minute and the dangerous Monaco striker also went close with another header.

"It was the technique of Japan against the physicality of South Korea," Zaccheroni, who has been hailed as a miracle worker since Friday's Argentina shock, said.

In Derby, England, Daniel Alves and Alexandre Pato were on target as Brazil beat Ukraine 2-0 on Monday, maintaining the five-time world champion's perfect record under new coach Mano Menezes. Brazil was without established stars such as Kaka, Lucio and Luis Fabiano.

Barcelona full back Alves opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a deflected volley and AC Milan striker Pato made the game safe with a shot on the turn in the 64th. Both players were on the scoresheet in Brazil's 3-0 win over Iran in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
