Steelers ease into Club World Cup semifinals
TWO goals from Denilson steered the Pohang Steelers to a 2-1 comeback victory over TP Mazembe on Friday and a place in the FIFA Club World Cup semifinals against Estudiantes de La Plata.
The African champion from the Democratic Republic of Congo took a first-half lead through Mbenza Bedi, but Brazilian forward Denilson struck twice after the break to secure victory for the Asian Champions League winner at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Denilson, who spent six years in the United Arab Emirates playing for Pro League clubs al-Shabab and al-Nasr from 1999 to 2005, equalized in the 50th minute and beat the offside trap for his second in the 77th.
The South Korean club will meet the South American champion Estudiantes of Argentina at the same venue on December 15.
Kim Jae-sung was the first to cause problems for Mazembe goalkeeper Mutebe Kidiaba, who did well to push out a dipping 30-meter free kick in the 10th.
Kidiaba was kept busy with another free kick from Kim, but it was the Congolese who scored first, Bedi firing a bullet from 30 meters into the corner of the net in the 28th.
Kim had two more chances to level, but wasted the chances with a couple of weak shots. In-between, Kidiaba produce a fine reflex save to deny Denilson with a header from close range.
There was no stopping Denilson in the second half, though, with the Brazilian heading the equalizer after No Byung-jun sent over a cross from the edge of the box.
Kim then failed to beat Kidiaba from close range and Mulota Kabangu came close to restoring Mazembe's lead with a shot from the edge of the area which flew wide, before Denilson fired the winner.
Mazembe pressed hard for the equalizer put the Steelers held on for a place in the semifinals.
In Berlin, a last-gasp goal from Hertha Berlin's Adrian Ramos denied Bayer Leverkusen the chance to go six points clear at the top of the German Bundesliga on Friday after a 2-2 draw.
Undefeated Leverkusen, which is on 32 points, four ahead of Werder Bremen and Schalke 04 who were playing each other yesterday, thought it had won it when Burak Kaplan's deflected shot gave it a 2-1 lead in the 90th minute.
Ramos, who had given the host the lead on eight minutes, headed in a Raffael corner on the final whistle to grab a point for bottom-placed Hertha, which was reduced to 10 men when Gojko Kacar was sent off 13 minutes from time with a second booking.
"We should have held on to that 2-1," Leverkusen's Toni Kroos, who had equalized in the 76th, told reporters. "We basically have our first-half performance to blame for not winning tonight."
