Stoke survives Fulham rally
STOKE withstood a second-half Fulham comeback to win 3-2 and move into the top half of the English Premier League on Tuesday.
Tuncay Sanli's 12th-minute, close-range header was followed by strikes from Abdoulaye Faye and Mamady Sidibe before halftime to give Stoke a 3-0 lead. But Fulham substitute Clint Dempsey set up Damian Duff to pull one back in the 61st and the American striker got on the scoresheet himself with a spectacular dipping strike in the 85th from 35 meters.
But Dempsey, who had replaced Bobby Zamora in the 54th after the English forward picked up an injury, couldn't produce an equalizer in snowing conditions.
"It was a good first half and we could have been more than 3-0 up, but fair play to Fulham, they threw bodies forward and when they got that second goal it got a bit twitchy," Stoke manager Tony Pulis said. "We have played better than today and not got a result, the longer you go without a win the nervier you get."
Stoke moved up to 10th in the standings, three points and a place behind Fulham.
The first leg of both League Cup semifinals were postponed because of heavy snow and extreme weather in northern England.
Blackburn was due to host Aston Villa on Tuesday, while Manchester City was to play Manchester United yesterday.
While the Ewood Park and City of Manchester Stadium pitches were deemed playable, accessing the stadiums would have been dangerous due to the heavy snowfall and ice covering surrounding roads.
"We have had the kind of harsh weather unseen in this part of the world for years and years," City chief executive Garry Cook said.
"We pursued every avenue possible in search of a solution and whilst the pitch is still playable, what was paramount in our thinking was the safety of fans traveling to and from the game..."
