Suarez powers Reds to victory
DIRK Kuyt's controversial penalty and an individual effort by Luis Suarez earned Liverpool a 2-0 win at Sunderland in the English Premier League yesterday.
Kuyt opened the scoring from the spot in the 34th minute even though the tackle by Sunderland defender John Mensah, who was later shown a straight red for a professional foul, brought down Jay Spearing outside the area.
Suarez wrapped up victory in the 77th, running along the byline and fooling goalkeeper Simon Mignolet with a clever shot that crept in at the near post from a sharp angle.
Any hopes of the host recovering were dashed when Mensah was dismissed for wrestling Suarez to the ground as the Uruguay striker chased a clearance.
Liverpool is now just four points behind fifth-place Tottenham (49) as it chases a European spot for next season. Sunderland, without a win since January, is ninth.
On Saturday, Dimitar Berbatov's late goal gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers as closest challenger Arsenal lost ground in the title race despite salvaging a 2-2 draw at West Bromwich Albion.
Substitute Berbatov tapped in from close range in the 88th to send Alex Ferguson's team five points clear at the top and earn sighs of relief from his side, which had been reduced to 10 men after the dismissal of Jonny Evans.
Arsenal staged a fightback from two goals down at the Hawthorns but could not find a late winner of its own.
Goals by Andrei Arshavin and Robin van Persie in the last 20 minutes canceled out strikes by Steven Reid and Peter Odemwingie.
United has 63 points from 30 matches while Arsenal is on 58 with a game in hand. Third-placed Manchester City (53) and Chelsea (51), in fourth, were meeting at Stamford Bridge yesterday.
In other games, Everton climbed to eighth with a 2-1 victory at home to Fulham in the late game; Stoke City thumped Newcastle United 4-0, while Wigan Athletic scored deep into stoppage time to beat fellow struggler Birmingham City 2-1. Wigan stayed bottom on 30 points but there are only three points between it and 13th-placed Blackburn Rovers, which rallied from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Blackpool.
