Substitutes strike late in Chelsea’s Norwich win
Two goals in two minutes late in the match by substitutes Eden Hazard and Willian propelled Chelsea to a 3-1 victory at Norwich City and into third place in the English Premier League yesterday.
Chelsea took a fourth-minute lead with Oscar’s first-time shot from a Demba Ba layoff.
Norwich kept a dominant Chelsea at bay for the rest of the first half before stepping up its game after the break with the reward coming in the 68th minute through Anthony Pilkington.
Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw with five minutes to go, substitute Hazard made the most of a quick Chelsea break to put the visitors back in front, while a minute later Willian curled in a superb shot on his league debut.
In other action, Southampton continued its good start with a 2-0 win at home to Swansea City with Adam Lallana netting in the 19th and Jay Rodriguez adding another on 83 minutes.
Later in the day, Arsenal will have the chance to return to the top of the standings when it travels to West Bromwich Albion, while Tottenham Hotspur entertains West Ham United.
Liverpool leads the table with 16 points from seven matches after beating Crystal Palace 3-1 on Saturday, while Arsenal has 15.
Chelsea’s win lifted it to third on 14, with Southampton level on points in fourth, one point above Manchester City and Spurs. Champion Manchester United is ninth with 10 points.
United unearthed a sparkling gem to lighten the early-season gloom as Adnan Januzaj struck twice in a 2-1 win at Sunderland on Saturday.
The champion seemed to be heading for a third consecutive Premiership defeat for the first time in 12 years after Craig Gardner had given Sunderland a deserved first-half lead but 18-year-old Januzaj, given a first league start by David Moyes, spared its blushes.
He sidefooted a 55th-minute equalizer and six minutes later produced a sumptuous left-foot volley to seal three welcome points for a United side experiencing its worst start to a season since 1989.
Manager Moyes has been looking for some respite after consecutive league defeats by City and West Brom and a none-too-convincing Champions League draw against Shakhtar Donetsk and he was rewarded for his decision to offer Januzaj a chance.
“He is a wonderful player, he is someone who we think a lot of. I have tried to get him in the team over the last few weeks but for various reasons it did not happen,” Moyes said of Januzaj, who has Kosovar-Albanian heritage but is wanted by Belgium.
