THE 2018 Xinmin Evening News Summer Football Tournament concluded at Shanghai Yuanshen Stadium on Monday. As the city’s most popular student football tournament, this year’s event attracted more than 1,000 teams in the preliminary round, which started at the end of May; 128 of them advanced to the one-week finals, which were held from August 1-7. Shanghai Wenlai Middle School Team won the middle school final, while Shanghai Kuxi Sports Team was the champion of the high school competition. Shanghai SIPG striker and Chinese Super League leading scorer Wu Lei attended the final-day matches as tournament ambassador. “The tournament has a history of 33 years, which is longer than China’s top-tier professional league,” said Wu. “A lot of foreign football stars started their career from campus football.”
