Sunderland delivers Chelsea knock out

Sunderland upset Chelsea in the League Cup on Tuesday to reach the semifinals, scoring late goals in both normal time and extra time for the victory.

Manchester City also booked a place in the final four as Edin Dzeko scored twice in a 3-1 win at Leicester.

Midfielder Ki Sung-yueng grabbed Sunderland’s winner with two minutes left at the Stadium of Light, with Chelsea having been taken to extra time after conceding an 88th-minute equalizer by Fabio Borini.

“It was just unbelievable, I didn’t expect to score but I am really pleased to help the team go through,” Ki told Sky Sports.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho once again rued his team’s missed chances.

“We never lost a match because we didn’t play or that the opponent was stronger, it’s just we don’t kill opponents and we give them life,” Mourinho said.

“Every opponent knows they can score a goal against us. We had fantastic chances to score and didn’t score.”

Frank Lampard bundled in the opening goal in the 46th for Chelsea.

Like Chelsea, City rested several key players but still had enough to see off second-tier Leicester 3-1, with Dzeko’s brace adding to the opener scored by Aleksandar Kolarov from a superb free kick.

Dzeko has been given limited playing time in recent weeks because of the brilliant form of fellow strikers Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo. With Aguero sidelined for at least a month with a calf injury, Dzeko is set to see more action over the busy Christmas period.

“It is an important competition,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “It is important to win every game... to get to the final at Wembley would be wonderful for the supporters.”
