Sunderland rallies to hold Reds

LIVERPOOL rued a missed penalty and a disallowed goal as it drew 1-1 at home to Sunderland on the opening day of the English Premier League season yesterday.

The hosts went ahead through Luis Suarez's 12th-minute header but an earlier miss by the Uruguayan from the spot and a disallowed Andy Carroll effort allowed Sunderland to stay in the game.

A great volley by winger Sebastian Larsson in the 57th minute gave the Swede a goal on his debut and the visitors a share of the points at Anfield.

There were mixed fortunes for the newcomers, with Queens Park Rangers thumped 4-0 at home by Bolton Wanderers and Norwich City snatching a point with a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic. Both Wigan and Norwich are tipped for relegation struggle this season.

Elsewhere, Wolverhampton Wanderers won 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers and Fulham drew 0-0 with Aston Villa in a turgid game at Craven Cottage.

A new-look Liverpool side had to settle for a point at Anfield.

Suarez blazed a fifth-minute penalty over the bar, but the Uruguayan forward made amends in the 12th when he nodded home a free kick sent over by Charlie Adam, one of four players making their debuts for Liverpool.

Another newcomer, Stewart Downing, cracked a shot against the crossbar and Carroll had a strike ruled out as Liverpool dominated the first half proceedings.

However, the Reds paid for the missed chances when Ahmed El Mohamady floated over a cross from the right and Larsson met it with an acrobatic volley on the Sunderland midfielder's debut just before the hour mark.

Midfielder Jon Henderson and defender Jose Enqirue also made their Liverpool debuts yesterday.

In Germany, Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund lost 0-1 at Hoffenheim yesterday while Bayern Munich won by the same score thanks to an injury-time winner at VfL Wolfsburg.

Dutchman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar grabbed a hat-trick as Schalke 04 thumped hapless FC Cologne 5-1.

Mainz 05, 2-1 winner at SC Freiburg, and Hanover 96, which won by the same margin at FC Nuremberg, top the Bundesliga table with six points from two games.

Dortmund, which began with an impressive 3-1 win over Hamburg SV a week ago, was beaten by an early Sejad Salihovic free kick.

Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo side-footed home in injury-time to notch Bayern's first league goal of the season and give new coach Jupp Heynckes, in his third stint at the club, his first points of the campaign.

Franck Ribery cut the ball back for the Brazilian midfielder to shoot from outside the penalty area, Diego Benaglio getting his hands to the ball but failing to keep it out.

Patrick Helmes had a goal ruled out in the 39th minute, when television replays showed the Wolfsburg striker was onside.

Elsewhere, Hamburg drew 2-2 with Hertha Berlin.

Borussia Moenchengladbach was hosting VfB Stuttgart later in the day.
