Sunderland reels

SUNDERLAND faces an anxious final day of the Premier League season after a 1-3 defeat at Portsmouth on Monday left it in serious danger of relegation.

Needing a win to guarantee its safety, Sunderland went ahead through Kenwyne Jones just before the hour mark but Portsmouth hit back immediately through John Utaka.

A mistake by Anton Ferdinand let in Utaka after 68 minutes resulting in an own goal by defender Phil Bardsley who was trying to clear.

Armand Traore added a third for Portsmouth late on to leave Sunderland, which is at home to Chelsea next, just two points above Newcastle United.

Newcastle, which is third from bottom, has 34 points with Hull City above it on 35 and Sunderland on 36, setting up a nail-biting finale.

Defeat at Aston Villa would relegate Newcastle although it would survive if it draws and Hull loses at home to champion Manchester United.

West Bromwich Albion is down while Middlesbrough, which has 32 points, needs to beat West Ham United comfortably and hope that Hull and Newcastle both lose.
