Swansea, Everton drop first points

SPANISH striker Michu hit his fourth goal in three league games but Swansea City missed the chance to top the fledgling English Premier League standings after the Welsh side was held 2-2 at home by Sunderland yesterday.

Everton also lost its perfect record after goals from Shane Long and Gareth McAuley secured a 2-0 victory for West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Chelsea, which is not in league action this weekend, has a maximum nine points, followed by Swansea and West Brom on seven.

Wigan Athletic twice led at home to Stoke City but had to settle for a 2-2 draw.

New Tottenham Hotspur signing Moussa Dembele came off the bench to score on his debut but coach Andre Villas-Boas was left waiting for his first win in charge after Robert Snodgrass scored five minutes from time to earn Norwich City a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane. Spurs had also conceded a late goal against West Brom.

And Villas-Boas's day got worse when substitute Tom Huddlestone, only on for seven minutes, was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Jonny Howson.

This result will only increase the pressure on Villas-Boas, sacked by Chelsea last season before Spurs' London rival won the Champions League, to prove he can succeed in England.

Earlier, striker Andy Carroll enjoyed a bitter sweet debut for West Ham United after joining on loan from Liverpool, helping set up a first-minute goal for Kevin Nolan in a 3-0 demolition of Fulham before suffering a second-half hamstring injury that could sideline him from England's opening two 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Winston Reid and Matt Taylor also scored for the Hammers against a Fulham side that gave a debut to new signing Dimitar Berbatov.

West Ham has six points from three matches.

Carroll had been expected to feature heavily in England coach Roy Hodgson's plans for the two matches after Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was ruled out with a thigh gash.

"It's a huge result but the only real disappointment for us is Andy might have tweaked a hamstring," Hammers boss Sam Allardyce told Sky Sports. "It is hugely disappointing if that's the case but it will be unlikely he goes (away with England).

"I don't think he has much chance - sadly for Roy (Hodgson) and sadly for us. It depends on the extent of the damage.

"He is desperate to play football. We had Carlton Cole warmed up and ready to go and Andy was going to be substituted anyway in the next couple of minutes. But unusually he did it (injured the hamstring) on the jump."

Champion Manchester City, with four points from its opening two games, was hosting Queens Park Rangers later.
