Ten-man Juventus beats Catania to go second
TEN-MAN Juventus moved into second place in Serie A behind Inter Milan yesterday after Christian Poulsen scored an injury time winner in a 2-1 victory over Catania.
Fiorentina similarly needed a last-minute goal by Alberto Gilardino to beat Lazio 1-0 and move into fourth place, while AS Roma is joint fifth after beating Genoa 3-0.
Inter, which beat Lecce 3-0 on Saturday, is top with 53 points, Juventus is second on 46, AC Milan lies third with 45 after drawing 1-1 with Reggina on Saturday and Fiorentina is fourth on 41.
Juventus forward Vincenzo Iaquinta gave Claudio Ranieri's side an 11th minute lead with a header from a Mauro Camoranesi free kick, but was dismissed a minute later after he received his second yellow card of the game.
Gianluigi Buffon needed to pull off important saves throughout the first period to keep his side in the lead. Lorenzo Stovini, Takayuki Morimoto and Alessandro Potenza all had goal bound efforts stopped by the Italian goalkeeper.
Morimoto brought Catania level early in the second half, reacting quickest to tap home a rebound after Buffon had blocked Giuseppe Mascara's header.
But Juventus took the points in the last minute, when Poulsen reacted first to Amauri's header across the penalty area.
"I wanted the team to get their form back. In recent matches we have lost our shape, which is fundamental to us doing well. Today we had a good game, 10 against 11 against a Catania side who didn't stop," Ranieri said.
Fiorentina took advantage of Genoa's slip up in Rome, but left it late.
Gilardino poked in the rebound after Fernando Muslera had stopped strike partner Adrian Mutu's low shot.
Despite coming off a run of three consecutive losses, Lazio caused Cesare Prandelli's side plenty of problems.
Goran Pandev had an early chance, but Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey was equal to the shot and later in the first half Pasquale Foggia hit the post.
Mauro Zarate failed to score midway through the second half when he chose to shoot, rather than pass to Pandev or Maggio who were in front of an open goal.
"We're not used to stealing matches like this," Prandelli said. "We made too many errors and gave too much to our opponents. We have to try to do better, because today we didn't show our best."
Francesco Totti, Simone Perrotta and Mirko Vucinic returned for Roma following injury and reinvigorated Luciano Spalletti's team.
Perrotta and Totti both played a part in Roma's opening goal, combining with Matteo Brighi to play Cicinho into the penalty area and open the scoring on 26 minutes.
Roma had the match wrapped up early in the second half when Mirko Vucinic rounded Genoa goalkeeper Rubinho and rolled the ball home.
Julio Baptista scored a third in injury time, but by then both sides were down to 10 men.
Roma's Rodrigo Taddei received a straight red card for elbowing Domenico Criscito, whilst Genoa's Giuseppe Sculli received two yellow cards, the second for a foul on Totti.
"I have to compliment the team for overcoming Genoa and I am sure that they, along with Fiorentina and ourselves will be there till the end," Spalletti said.
Spalletti also eased worries over Cicinho who was carried off after falling awkwardly.
"Unfortunately he fell to the ground badly, but he had it checked straight away and it is nothing serious," he said.

Ezequiel Lavezzi had the best chance of the second half, but he failed to draw Napoli level by volleying wide.
