Terim scripts another great escape at Schalke
GALATASARAY'S nail-biting Champions League win over Schalke 04 bore the indelible stamp of its coach Fatih Terim and brought back memories of his never-say-die Turkey side at Euro 2008.
Held 1-1 at home in the first leg of its last 16 tie, the Turkish league leader fell behind, hit back to lead 2-1 at halftime, spent the entire second half pinned back and then snatched a 3-2 win in stoppage time.
The win put the Turks in the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time since 2001 and began to pay back the investment on Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder and Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba.
Terim is in his third stint as Galatasaray coach but Tuesday's display was more reminiscent of his days with the Turkish national side.
Having lost its opening Euro 2008 group game, Turkey came from behind to beat co-hosts Switzerland 2-1 and rallied to beat the Czech Republic 3-2.
Even more dramatic was the quarterfinal win over Croatia, where Turkey fell behind in the 29th minute of extra-time, equalized immediately and won on penalties.
Terim fielded an attacking line-up at Schalke on Tuesday with Drogba and Burak Yilmaz, who scored its second goal, up front and Sneijder playing just behind them.
With eight goals, Yilmaz is the competition's joint leading scorer alongside Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.
