Tevez joins Shenhua in mega-deal

CARLOS Albert Tevez became the latest high-profile international player to join the big-spending Chinese Super League when Shanghai Greenland Shenhua confirmed the signing of the Argentina striker from his boyhood club Boca Juniors yesterday.

“Tevez will go through his medical and then join the team on the Japanese island of Okinawa,” said the club’s statement. “His arrival will largely upgrade the team’s attacking ability and enrich front line strategies. The club looks forward to Tevez helping Greenland Shenhua conquer opponents in Asian and domestic leagues and contribute to more exciting games for fans.”

Tevez’s contract is for two years and Britain’s Daily Mail reported that his weekly salary would be 615,000 pounds (US$643,000), making him the best paid player in the world. Shenhua did not confirm the figure.

Although no financial details of the deal were released, media reports have suggested that Shenhua paid 84 million euros (US$87.85 million) for Tevez. The hefty price tag will make Tevez the world’s sixth most expensive player, behind Paul Pogba, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain and Neymar, according to the German-based soccer information website transfermarkt.com.

Shenhua set its sight on the 32-year-old striker as early as three months ago. Club officials held talks with him in Buenos Aires in late November when primary agreements were reached. After Tevez captained Boca to three victories in the domestic league earlier this month, the transfer was put back on track.

According to the contract, Tevez can leave Shenhua if he doesn’t feel like staying in the CSL after the first season, but would have to pay two-third of his transfer fee as compensation.

Under new coach Gus Poyet, a former Uruguay international, Shenhua is scheduled to fly to Japan on January 2 for winter training. The club decided to give its new striker 10 more days of rest considering he played in the Argentine league not long ago. Tevez, who tied the knot last Thursday in Uruguay, is set to join the team on January 12.

Tevez started his career with Boca, scoring 38 goals in 110 appearances from 2001 to 2005. He also played for Brazilian side Corinthians, English clubs West Ham United, Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as Serie A side Juventus before returning to Boca in 2015.

Tevez is expected to take over the attacking role from Senegal striker Demba Ba, who is still recovering from surgery on a leg fracture.

Shenhua finished fourth in the 2016 CSL, one spot behind cross-town rival SIPG, which itself made a splash last week by signing Chelsea’s Brazil midfielder Oscar in a deal believed to be worth 60 million euros.

Italian Graziano Pelle, Argentina’s Ezequiel Lavezzi and Jackson Martinez of Colombia are all recent arrivals in China, while SIPG manager Andre Villas-Boas is also on a lucrative contract since replacing former England boss Sven Goran-Eriksson.

The 2017 CSL season kicks off in March. Guangdong Evergrande is the defending champion, with big-spending Jiangsu Suning finishing runner-up last season.
