Tevez signs for Shanghai Shenhua
CARLOS Tevez has become the latest big name to land in the big spending Chinese Super League, whose transfer from Boca Juniors has been officially announced by his new club Shanghai Greenland Shenhua on Thursday morning.
“Tevez will go through his medical and then join the team on the Japanese island of Okinawa,” said the statement. “His arrival will largely upgrade the team’s attacking ability and enrich front line strategies. The club looks forward to Tevez helping Greenland Shenhua conquer opponents in Asian and domestic leagues and contribute to more exciting games for fans.”
Tevez’s contract will last for two years. The value on the transaction had not been unveiled, which is said to be no higher than the CSL record made by Shanghai SIPG’s Oscar, who joined CSL from Chelsea on 60 million euros (US$62.8). Argentine media previously reported that Tevez would make US$84 million in the next two years – 20 times his previous earnings.
Greenland Shenhua set its sight on the 32-year-old striker as early as three months ago. Club officials held a talk with him in Buenos Aires in late November, and primary agreements have been reached. After Tevez captained Boca Juniors to three victories in domestic league earlier this month, the transfer was put onto track.
According to the contract, Tevez can leave Shenhua if he doesn’t feel like to stay in CSL after the first season, but would have to pay two-third of his transfer fee as compensation.
Under the coach of former Uruguay international Gus Poyet, Greenland Shenhua is scheduled to fly to Japan on January 2 for winter trainings. The club decided to give their new striker 10 more days of rest considering he played in the Argentine league not long time ago. Tevez is set to join the team on January 12.
Tevez started his career with Boca Juniors, scoring 38 goals in 110 appearances from 2001 to 2005. He also played for Brazilian side Corinthians, English clubs West Ham United, Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as Serie A side Juventus before returning to Boca Juniors in 2015.
Shenhua finished fourth after third placed city rival SIPG in the 2016 CSL. Tevez is expected to take over the attacking task from Senegal striker Demba Ba, who is still recovering from his surgery on a leg fracture.
