Thousands held in Asia gambling raids
AN operation targeting illegal soccer gambling in Asia during the World Cup has resulted in the arrests of over 5,000 people and the seizure of nearly US$10 million.
Interpol said the operation, which ran from June 11 to July 11, was aimed at gambling linked to organized crime gangs. Police raided nearly 800 illegal gambling dens in the operation in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and China. The illegal gambling dens had taken more than US$155 million in bets.
