Tigana assistants face the sack
SHANGHAI Shenhua is preparing to sack three assistant coaches, but the Chinese Super League team will keep French head coach Jean Tigana, a local newspaper said yesterday.
Tigana, the former Fulham and Monaco boss, joined the CSL club in December last year. French striker Nicolas Anelka also joined Shenhua, signing a two-year deal after moving from English Premier League Chelsea, as the club seeks to improve its record.
But Shenhua has only won one of its five matches so far this season, losing two and drawing two.
The chief investor of Shenhua, Zhu Jun, was quoted as saying that the removal of the three assistants who were originally brought on board by Tigana would improve training.
"The main reason for changing the assistant coaches is to strengthen the team's daily training," he told the Xinmin Evening News.
The three assistant coaches, all foreign nationals, were not named in the report but they all had experience in the English Premier League.
A Shenhua official declined to comment on the report.
The club is scheduled to hold a news conference today amid speculation the move will be announced at that time.
Considered to be a team to watch out for in the preseason, Shenhua has played well below expectations, and even though the team has said Tigana is safe for the moment, the French coach may find his position becoming increasingly untenable.
Anelka may have scored two goals, but the pressure on Tigana to improve on the team's 11th place in the table is steadily increasing. The former French international's honeymoon period has ended with fans and media unhappy with the team's performance.
"The biggest problem is that nothing has changed after five matches," one unnamed source told the local Oriental Sports Daily. "The only victory in the league came down to luck, not tactics.
"Why did Chelsea sack (Andre) Villas-Boas? He lost control in the dressing room, and the same thing is happening at Shanghai Shenhua."
According to the same paper, players have complained about Tigana's training style as well as his lack of knowledge of the league and Asian football in general.
Guangzhou sides, Guangzhou R&F and Guangzhou Evergrande, lead the CSL table after five games on 12 and 10 points, respectively. Jiangsu Sainty and Liaoning Whowin are next on 9 points.
