Tigana quits Shenhua job

SHANGHAI Shenhua coach Jean Tigana has handed in his resignation and a replacement should be announced by tomorrow, the club's chief investor Zhu Jun confirmed yesterday.
The Frenchman, whose three assistants were sacked last week after five rounds of the Chinese Super League, appeared at Hongkou Football Stadium last Friday before Shenhua's sixth-round game against Tianjin Teda but left before kickoff after he was not allowed to sit on the coach's seat, according to reports.
Jean-Florent Ibenge, one of the new assistant coaches, is likely to be promoted as the new manager, Zhu told sina.com yesterday. The club is expected to announce the change as early as tomorrow.
Nicolas Anelka, who was officially named player-coach last week, has been directing training these days, insiders said.
Meanwhile, former Shenhua manager Wu Jingui, who took the team to its last championship in 2003, said the club had contacted him, Shanghai television's sports channel reported yesterday. However, the club denied any contact with the 51-year-old through its official microblog account on weibo.com.
Shenhua lies 14th among 16 teams with only five points. Its derby rival, Shanghai Shenxin, meanwhile, lost 1-2 away to Qingdao Jonoon yesterday.
In other games yesterday, it was: Changchun Yatai 0, Guizhou Renhe 0; Dalian Aerbin 1, Henan Jianye 0; and Guangzhou R&F 1, Dalian Shide 0.
