Toffees win 7th straight to go fourth

EVERTON won 1-0 at bottom club Sunderland to leapfrog Arsenal into fourth place in the English Premier League yesterday and the battle at the other end of the table intensified with wins for three clubs in danger of relegation.

The only goal at the Stadium of Light came after 75 minutes when Sunderland defender Wes Brown chested a cross from Everton’s on-loan midfielder Gerard Deulofeu into his own net to give the Toffees a seventh successive victory and move them into the Champions League places.

They have 66 points, two more than Arsenal which was playing FA Cup holder Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup semifinal at Wembley.

Sunderland’s defeat left it four points adrift at the bottom after second-from-bottom Cardiff City won 1-0 at Southampton and Fulham, which is 18th, beat fourth-from-bottom Norwich City 1-0 at Craven Cottage.

Crystal Palace eased its relegation fears with a 1-0 home win over Aston Villa but West Bromwich Albion, which started the day in 16th place, drew 3-3 with Tottenham Hotspur after leading 3-0 after 31 minutes. Spurs also missed a penalty.

Palace’s victory saw the Loftus Road outfit climb to 37 points and virtual safety while West Brom stayed in 16th place.

The bottom four positions are occupied by Norwich which has 32 points, followed by Fulham (30), Cardiff (29) and Sunderland (25). Sunderland has two games in hand on the teams above it.

The top three sides Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are all in action today with Liverpool playing Manchester City at Anfield and Chelsea going to Swansea City.

All of yesterday’s matches kicked off at 1507 local time to commemorate the Hillsborough disaster 25 years ago this weekend when 96 Liverpool fans died at their FA Cup semifinal against Nottingham Forest in Sheffield.

That match was abandoned after six minutes and the seven-minute delay yesterday marked that duration and also included a minute’s silence around the grounds.

At the Hawthorns, West Brom squandered a 3-0 lead against Spurs.

Matej Vydra gave West Brom a first-minute lead from close range when Spurs and France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris palmed a Morgan Amalfitano cross into his path.

Things got even better for the Baggies three minutes later when Chris Brunt volleyed home after Spurs failed to clear a Steven Reid cross.

Travelling Spurs fans must have feared the north London club’s luck was out when, after Amalfitano brought down Danny Rose, Emmanuel Adebayor’s weak penalty was saved by England goalkeeper Ben Foster.

West Brom then made it 3-0 in the 31st when a poor backwards header by Spurs’ Younes Kaboul allowed Stephane Sessegnon to run through and score.

Spurs, however, did pull a goal back three minutes later when Jonas Olsson deflected Aaron Lennon’s ball across the box into his own net.

The visitors made it 3-2 with 20 minutes left when Harry Kane headed in a Lennon cross and sixth-placed Spurs’ comeback was complete in stoppage time when Christian Eriksen smashed in an equalizer.

Norwich may have sacked manager Chris Hughton in a bid to preserve its Premier League status but the Canaries first match under former youth coach Neil Adams left them even closer to relegation after their defeat at Fulham.

The visitors fell behind when Hugo Rodallega rifled the ball into the roof of a net five minutes before half-time.

Elsewhere, Stoke City edged Newcastle United 1-0 when Erik Pieters’s 42nd-minute cross floated over the head of Magpies goalkeeper Tim Krul.
