Torres gives Liverpool win, but Man City lose
FERNANDO Torres scored his first goal in 10 games as Liverpool kick-started their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at Anfield yesterday.
Big spending Manchester City though, who beat Liverpool 3-0 on Monday, were beaten 1-0 at Sunderland where Darren Bent's stoppage time penalty gave the home side all three points.
In earlier action Bolton fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home with Birmingham City, recovering after their Finnish international goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was sent off for a senseless foul in the first half after slapping Birmingham's Roger Johnson in the face.
In later action Aston Villa were facing Everton at Villa Park.
Torres struck the winner for Liverpool after 65 minutes at Anfield when he volleyed in a cross from Dirk Kuyt. Albion ended with 10 men after midfielder James Morrison was sent off for a late challenge on Torres four minutes from time.
At the Stadium of Light, Carlos Tevez was guilty of a glaring miss after 14 minutes when he shot over the bar from 12 metres out with an open goal in front of him.
The deadlock was finally broken in stoppage time when Micah Richards fouled Bent to concede the penalty and Bent struck his spot-kick underneath England's current No.1 Joe Hart to score.
Birmingham led 2-0 at Bolton after goals from Johnson (4th minute) and Craig Gardner (50th), but Bolton stormed back for a point with a penalty from Kevin Davies (71) and a freekick from former Birmingham player Robbie Blake 10 minutes later.
