Totti tops 200-goal mark in Roma win
AS Roma captain Francesco Totti scored twice in a 2-2 draw at Fiorentina yesterday, breaking the 200-goal barrier for his Serie A career.
Adrian Mutu dribbled past Roma's Brazilian defender Juan to put Fiorentina ahead in the 22nd minute but Roma's John Arne Riise was taken down inside the area four minutes later to set up Totti's 200th with a penalty kick.
Defender Alessandro Gamberini then restored Fiorentina's lead in the 34th with a close-range volley but Totti equalized again in the 52nd with an angled shot for his 201st goal.
Totti became only the sixth player in Serie A history with 200 goals. Silvio Piola, who won the World Cup with Italy in 1938, tops the list with 274 goals, ahead of Gunnar Nordahl (225), Giuseppe Meazza (216), Jose Altafini (216) and Roberto Baggio (205).
Roma remained sixth, 12 points behind Serie A leader AC Milan, while Fiorentina is ninth, 21 points back.
Major blow
Milan's title hopes suffered a major blow when it suffered a shock 0-1 defeat at struggling Palermo on Saturday.
Defender Dorin Goian scored the only goal in the 10th minute to leave Milan five points ahead of Inter Milan and six above Napoli.
Second-placed Inter can put the pressure on its city rival by beating lowly Lecce yesterday when Napoli was hosting mid-table Cagliari.
Milan has 62 points from 30 games ahead of Inter on 57 and Napoli with 56. Lazio moved up to fourth on 54 with a 1-0 win over Cesena in Saturday's early kickoff.
Palermo, which had lost its last five games, moved up to seventh, while the Rossoneri's fourth defeat is likely to mean the result of the Milan derby on April 3 will go a long way to deciding who wins this season's scudetto.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's absence was obvious as Massimo Allegri's side was reduced to shooting from long range in the vague hope of drawing level. "We are still in a good position," Allegri said. "We were poor in the first half and sat back too much. We improved in the second, but Palermo protected the goal well."
