Toulouse loses 1-0 at Grenoble in French league

TOULOUSE lost 1-0 at Grenoble yesterday after a penalty from Laurent Courtois, dealing a blow to the club's hopes of securing a European place next season.

Courtois struck in the 40th minute of a tight match, and Grenoble's defense did well to neutralize Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, the French league's top scorer.

Toulouse remains on 56 points after 32 rounds and dropped provisionally to fifth place, three points behind third-placed Bordeaux, which has played a game less and hosts seven-time defending champion Lyon today.

Lyon has 60 points from 31 rounds and is a point behind leader Marseille.

The win moved Grenoble up to 13th place with 38 points, boosting its chances of avoiding relegation to the second division.

Relegation-threatened Nantes also secured a vital 2-0 home win against Nice with goals in each half from Christian Bekamenga and Mamadou Bagayoko. The win moved Nantes into 16th place with 33 points and out of the relegation zone.

In yesterday's other results, it was: Caen 1, Nancy 2; Monaco 3, Rennes 1; Sochaux 0, Auxerre 1; and Valenciennes 0, Le Mans 2.

Struggling Saint-Etienne remain in 18th place after beating Lille 2-1 in yesterday's late match, improving its chances of staying in the top flight.

Strike partners Araujo Ilan and Bafetimbi Gomis got a goal each in the second half to put Les Verts 2-0 up, but a late goal from Lille striker Nicolas Fauvergue ensured a nervy finish for Saint-Etienne.

In today's other games, Marseille travels to Lorient and Paris Saint-Germain hosts last-placed Le Havre.
