Toure issues Pep apology
WITH a 110-word apology, Yaya Toure is hoping to mend his relationship with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and regain his place in the team.
Toure was warned by Guardiola in September that he wouldn’t play again until he received an apology over outbursts by the player’s agent. Dimitri Seluk irritated Guardiola by claiming the manager humiliated Toure by leaving him out of City’s squad for the UEFA Champions League.
Two months later, the 33-year-old Toure distanced himself from Seluk’s comments and sought to heal the rift with Guardiola yesterday.
“I wish to apologize — on behalf of myself and those who represent me — to the management team and all those working at the club for the misunderstandings from the past,” Toure wrote on Facebook. “Those statements do not represent my views on the club or the people who work there.”
Guardiola previously coached Toure at Barcelona, and sold him to City. An integral part of City’s team since signing in 2010, Toure won the Premier League in 2012 and 2014 but has been ostracized in Guardiola’s first season in charge.
“I have nothing but respect for Manchester City and only wish the best for the football club,” Toure said. “I am immensely proud to have played a part in the club’s history and want to help City succeed further. I live to play football and entertain the fans.
“On that note, I would like to thank all of the fans for their messages through this difficult period. This means a great deal to me and my family.”
Toure struggled for form last season and could find Guardiola’s high-energy pressing game difficult. He recently retired from internationals after playing 113 times for the Ivory Coast.
