U12 international tourney
NINE under-12 youth football teams, including those from Spain, Germany, Japan and South Korea, are currently in Shanghai for the 2016 Shanghai International Youth Football Tournament, which kicked off on Tuesday and will run through July 3.
Chinese participants include youth teams from Chinese Super League sides Guangzhou Evergrande, Shandong Luneng and Hangzhou Greentown, as the three clubs boast the best U12 sides in the country. Also taking part are two local teams sent by Yangpu and Putuo districts. Jointly organized by the Shanghai Sports Bureau, the Shanghai Education Commission and Yangpu District, the tournament, first held in 2011, aims at promoting football among primary school students. “This is the age children should get access to more football competitions,” said Cheng Yaodong, a former national defender and Shanghai U20 team coach, who is also a tournament ambassador. “It’s through competitions that problems can be found and eventually solved.” Cheng, however, pointed out that it is the duty of the government and football clubs to detect talents and provide elite training to players at a suitable age. A total of 36 matches will be played at the tournament.
