UAE aims big with tourney
THE United Arab Emirates will hold an international soccer event early next year with top teams from five continents.
Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), one of the seven emirates of UAE, will host the first World Soccer Identities 2013, Sheikh Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi, President of the International Federation of Football History & Statistics, said recently.
The Ras Al Khaimah World Soccer Identities 2013 will be held from January 1-7 and will feature a tournament between six of "the most famous teams in the world" who will vie for the Saqr Cup.
The participating teams will be announced in September. The organizers insisted that three of the six clubs will be top teams from the major leagues in Europe.
"I expect only the top teams from the top classifications to come," Sheikh Mohammed, a brother of Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the emirate's ruler, said.
During the winter break, European clubs head to warmer climates for training and commercial purposes, the most notable being Manchester United which has held training sessions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
"We've considered the timing and talked about it. Most of the teams will be on holiday and will be able to travel to UAE," said Azzeddine Harkati, the event's general manager.
