Udinese beats Roma to go top of Serie A
LATE goals from Antonio Di Natale and Mauricio Isla sent Udinese top of Serie A after a 2-0 win at home over AS Roma on Friday.
After a disappointing opening hour between two of Italian Serie A's most exciting teams, Di Natale broke the deadlock on 79 minutes, cracking his ninth goal of the season after running on to Giampiero Pinzi's fine through ball.
Chilean midfielder Mauricio Isla settled the contest a minute from time, tapping in Pablo Armero's cross to give Udinese its sixth straight home win this season.
With 24 points from 12 matches, Francesco Guidolin's side is two points ahead of Lazio and Juventus who were meeting later yesterday.
"I've rediscovered my team tonight," Guidolin told Italy's Sky Sport channel, wiping away memories of his team's below-par performance in last weekend's loss at Parma.
"We played according to our strengths and with great courage. We didn't want to give ground to Roma and get punished and that's exactly what we managed."
Roma, which remains fifth on 17 points, was clearly missing captain Francesco Totti who limped out of training last Wednesday with an ankle injury.
The capital side struggled to create chances in a tight game, in which neither goalkeeper was really tested. Roma's best chance came at the end of the first half but Miralem Pjanic fired wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
"We lost but we weren't worse than them," Roma coach Luis Enrique said. "A draw would have been a fairer result. The game was always balanced but then with Di Natale's goal we had to take more risks and then they scored again.
"Even after this loss I'm not pessimistic. But we have to improve in attack and defense."
In Germany, surprise package Borussia Moenchengladbach climbed to the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-0 win at FC Cologne on Friday as it continued its spectacular run this season.
Two goals from Mike Hanke and one from Juan Arango secured a fourth straight league win that saw it move on to 29 points, one ahead of Bayern Munich which travels to Mainz 05 today.
Champion Borussia Dortmund, in third place on 26 points, can itself claim top spot yesterday with a home win over bitter rival Schalke 04 which is a point behind in fourth.
