Udinese leads Serie A as Milan held
MODEST Udinese, whose coach Francesco Guidolin's target this season is to avoid relegation, went top of Serie A on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Chievo while AC Milan was held 2-2 at Bologna.
Antonio Di Natale and Dusan Basta scored second-half goals for Udinese which has managed to maintain last season's impressive form despite parting company with two of its most important players.
Milan was involved in a see-saw battle at Bologna, where Marco Di Vaio gave the hosts the lead, Clarence Seedorf and Zlatan Ibrahimovic replied for the titleholders and Alessandro Diamanti made it 2-2.
Atalanta was held 1-1 at home by 10-man Catania and Cagliari played out a goalless draw with Parma.
After 14 games, Udinese heads the table with 30 points, one more than unbeaten Juventus. Milan is third with 28 points, alongside Lazio, which won 3-2 at Lecce on Saturday.
In Spain, Espanyol completed a Barcelona city double over its Madrid-based rival in La Liga this weekend when it thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-2.
On Saturday, champion Barcelona was 3-1 victors at Real Madrid and its city neighbors stormed into an early lead over visiting Atletico.
Joan Verdu scored twice inside the first eight minutes and Ndri Romaric added a third in the 20th before Atletico were able to react.
Former Porto striker Radamel Falcao bravely headed one back for Atletico in the 32nd minute, but Sergio Garcia's determination saw him bundle in a fourth for Espanyol after the break. Arda Turan pulled one back for Atletico with a late volley.
Espanyol climbed to eighth with 20 points from 15 games, one ahead of Atletico in 10th, but 17 adrift of its derby rival Barca in first place.
