United, Arsenal go on a rampage
MANCHESTER United and Arsenal moved into the top four of the English Premier League after emphatic home wins over Wigan Athletic and Southampton, respectively, yesterday.
United beat Wigan Athletic 4-0 at Old Trafford with Paul Scholes among the scorers on his 700th appearance for the club, while Arsenal hammered Southampton 6-1 at the Emirates Stadium to hand the newly-promoted side a fourth successive defeat.
Chelsea stayed top of the table but lost its 100 percent record after its west London derby at Queens Park Rangers ended in a 0-0 draw.
Champion Manchester City also dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Stoke City where Peter Crouch put the home side ahead before new signing Javi Garcia replied with his first goal for his new side.
Chelsea remains the early leader with 10 points from four matches, followed by United (9), Arsenal (8) and City (8).
Swansea City, which started the day in second place, slipped down to fifth after losing 0-2 at Aston Villa, while West Bromwich Albion, which was third at the start, lost 0-3 at Fulham where Dimitar Berbatov scored twice and Albion had Peter Odemwingie sent off in the first half.
At Old Trafford, United trio Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand all reached impressive careers milestones in the win over Wigan.
Scholes, 37, who briefly retired for five months at the start of last season, made his 700th appearance for United and scored to put his side ahead in the 51st minute with his 163rd goal for the club.
Giggs, 38, who has played over 900 times for United, made his 600th Premier League appearance while Ferdinand, 33, played his 400th match for the club.
Before the match United manager Alex Ferguson praised all three veterans, telling reporters: "It's a landmark for the three of them and an example for younger players of what can be achieved if you make sacrifices in the game of football."
Meanwhile, the feud between QPR defender Anton Ferdinand and Chelsea captain John Terry continued with Ferdinand ignoring Terry in the pre-match handshake at Loftus Road.
Ferdinand also shunned Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, who gave evidence on Terry's behalf when Terry was found not guilty in court in July of racially abusing Ferdinand during the corresponding Premier League fixture last season.
Yesterday's meeting was the first between the sides since the court case.
The FA ruled on Friday the handshake would go ahead as normal after it was abandoned in an FA Cup match between the teams in January.
