United eyes Fabregas, Cavani in Paris
MANCHESTER United has submitted a bid for Barcelona and former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, a person with knowledge of the situation said.
The person said the United executives submitted the bid from Sydney where the team is currently on its pre-season tour.
Despite Barcelona offering no public indication that Fabregas is for sale, United has offered 30 million euros (US$39 million) to bring the former Arsenal captain back to the Premier League, as David Moyes looks to make his first major signing as manager of the English champions.
The transfer bid comes two years after Fabregas left Arsenal after pushing to rejoin boyhood club Barcelona for 29 million euros. There are three years remaining on his Camp Nou deal, and Arsenal is reported to have first refusal if Barcelona chooses to sell Fabregas.
At Old Trafford, the Spain midfielder would be re-united with striker Robin van Persie, who joined from Arsenal a year ago. The 26-year-old Fabregas would help to fill the void left by the retirement of Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher, who is continuing to recover from a bowel condition.
Elsewhere, Edinson Cavani was in Paris yesterday to finalize his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, with sources close to the deal saying his 64-million-euro (US$84 million) price tag would break the French record. The 26-year-old Napoli forward, who was Serie A top scorer last season with 29 goals, arrived in Paris yesterday.
Late morning, outgoing PSG sporting director Leonardo was seen leaving the luxury hotel with an advisor of the Uruguay player, who is nicknamed "The Matador".
Cavani will have to pass a medical before putting pen to paper, with a five-year deal expected, according to PSG sources.
