United gifts goals in home draw

MANCHESTER United, with Wayne Rooney starting on the bench, threw away a 2-0 lead as it was held 2-2 at home by West Bromwich Albion yesterday, United's fifth draw in eight English Premier League games this season.

Rooney, who played for England on Tuesday then risked the wrath of Alex Ferguson by contradicting the manager's analysis of his fitness, joined the fray after 71 minutes but was unable to make any impact.

Early goals by Javier Hernandez and Nani seemed to have United in control but a Patrice Evra own goal and one for Somen Tchoyi in the first 10 minutes of the second half following a fumble by United goalkeeper Edwin van der Saar were a fair reward for West Brom's attacking intent and ended United's bid for a fourth successive home league win.

United moved to 14 points, the same as Arsenal, which came from behind to beat Birmingham City 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium in London. Fulham's unbeaten start ended with a 1-2 home defeat by fellow London team Tottenham Hotspur, which also has 14 points, while Newcastle United drew 2-2 at home to Wigan Athletic.

Chelsea, the leader on 18 points, was at Aston Villa later while today Everton plays Liverpool and Manchester City visits Blackpool.

In Germany, Paolo Guerrero scored in the 89th minute to give Hamburg a 1-0 win at Mainz and knock the surprise team of the season from the top of the Bundesliga.

Mainz slipped to second place behind Borussia Dortmund, which won 2-1 at FC Cologne on Friday to take first place for the first time in seven years.

Guerrero's late goal ended the dream run of Mainz, which opened the season with seven straight wins and needed one more to break the Bundesliga record for the best season start.

Elsewhere, Mario Gomez scored a hat-trick to give struggling champion Bayern Munich a 3-0 win over Hanover 96 and take it to 11 points. Schalke 04, last season's runner-up, is 16th after being held to a 2-2 home draw by bottom club VfB Stuttgart, which fired coach Christian Gross last week.
