Valencia back up to 4th after edging past Getafe

VALENCIA reclaimed La Liga’s fourth Champions League qualification berth from Sevilla when forward Alvaro Negredo won and converted a penalty in a 1-0 victory at home to Getafe yesterday.

Negredo, who is on loan at the Singapore-owned club from English Premier League Manchester City, was felled by a wild kick from Juan Antonio Rodriguez in the 70th minute at a sun-drenched Mestalla.

He picked himself up and clipped a confident spot kick high into the middle of the goal to lift Valencia to 47 points from 23 matches, two ahead of fifth-placed Sevilla, which won 3-0 at struggling Cordoba on Saturday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were worthy winners on chances created, but were nearly made to pay for not putting the game to bed when Pablo Sarabia fired off target in injury time.

Real Madrid’s 2-0 success at home to Deportivo la Coruna on Saturday put it four points clear of second-placed Barcelona, which was hosting Levante later yesterday.

Champion Atletico Madrid is a further three points adrift of Barcelona in third ahead of yesterday’s game at Celta Vigo.

On Saturday, Real bounced back from its 0-4 derby humiliation by Atletico last weekend with victory over Deportivo.

The hosts started nervously but could have been well in front at the break as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale both struck the bar before Isco’s curling effort opened the scoring.

Deportivo had its chances to level early in the second-half with Celso Borges hitting the post, but Karim Benzema put the result beyond any doubt with Real’s second 17 minutes from time.
