Valencia sacks Ayestaran

STRUGGLING La Liga giant Valencia sacked coach Pako Ayestaran on Tuesday after failing to pick up a single point from its opening four league games of the season.
The former Liverpool assistant manager took charge in March when Gary Neville’s ill-fated three-month spell as boss came to end and initially guided Valencia away from the relegation zone with three wins in his first four matches.
However, seven straight losses since have left Los Che rooted to the bottom of La Liga.
“Following a meeting of the board of directors, Valencia Club de Futbol have taken the decision to release Pako Ayestaran from his role as first-team coach,” the club said in a statement.
“While the club is finalizing the appointment of a new coach, full responsibility and confidence is placed in Salvador Gonzalez — “Voro” — to take charge of the first team during this interim period.”
Ayestaran initially joined the club in February as an assistant to Neville.
However, he replaced the former Manchester United captain just a month later when Neville was sacked after a wretched run of three wins in 16 La Liga games.
Ayestaran had previously worked at Valencia as assistant to Rafael Benitez during Valencia’s most recent title winning campaigns in 2001/02 and 2003/04.
But he wasn’t aided by a fire sale of the club’s best players sanctioned by Singaporean owner Peter Lim in the off-season.
Andre Gomes and Paco Alcacer joined Barcelona, whilst Shkodran Mustafi left for Arsenal as Valencia recouped well over 100 million euros (US$111 million) in the transfer market.
Voro, who took charge of two games between Nuno Espirito Santo’s sacking and Neville’s appointment last season, is expected to lead the side for today’s La Liga clash at home to Alaves.
