Valladolid beats Sevilla 2-1 in Spanish league

RELEGATION-THREATENED Valladolid gained renewed hope with a 2-1 home win against fourth-placed Sevilla in the Spanish league yesterday.

A sharp-looking Valladolid challenged a slow, lethargic Sevilla for every ball in midfield, forcing visiting goalkeeper Andres Palop to three saves in the first 15 minutes.

Diego Costa rose to hit a perfectly timed header from a long range free kick, shaving the inside of the right post in the 41st minute.

A minute earlier Palop had earned a yellow card for wasting time through continual slow goalkick deliveries in what the referee judged to be too obvious a bid to avoid allowing Valladolid stealing possession from his clearances.

Sevilla once again lost the ball in the midfield to Costa, who ran forward to pass to Mateus "Manucho" Contreira, whose left-footed shot flew past Palop's head in the 53rd.

Frederic Kanoute went on for Alvaro Negredo in the 64th as coach Manuel Jimenez tried to inject power to Sevilla's attack.

Two minutes later Palop saved what would have been Costa's second after the Valladolid striker raced forward unchallenged past Sevilla central defender Ivica Dragutinovic.

Juan Torres Ruiz pulled one back for Sevilla with a spectacular kick from outside the area on the left flank in the 82nd.

Elsewhere, Roman Martinez and Alejandro Alfaro scored to give lowly Tenerife a 2-0 win against mid-table Sporting Gijon.

Martinez beat Sporting goalkeeper Juan Pablo Colinas after skillfully controlling an assist from Pablo Sicilia in the 70th.

Alejandro Alfaro doubled the score 17 minutes later to give Tenerife its first away win this season.

In a late, hard-fought mid-table clash where points and goal average were key to both teams, Getafe's Nicolas "Miku" Fedor scored twice to beat Villarreal 3-0.

Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna was substituted by Robert Pires in the 42nd after sustaining an injury. The damage to Senna's leg might concern Spain coach Vicente del Bosque who has often relied on the 33-year-old naturalized Brazilian in the national squad.

Villarreal began with fast, accurate attacking play and came close to scoring three times, hitting both posts and the crossbar in nine minutes of intense action late in the first half.

Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Lopez then lost the ball directly in front of Fedor who pounced to score against the run of play in the 56th.

Getafe's Jose Maria Jimenez then struck a free kick which bounced off the post only to ricochet into goal in the 72nd after hitting the hapless Lopez in the back.

Fedor doubled his score in the 86th after controlling a setup from Manuel del Moral, who had punctured Villarreal's defense along the right flank.

Barcelona heads the standings on 80 points, three more than second-placed Real Madrid. Valencia is third on 56 points, five more than Sevilla whose loss against Valladolid means a failed opportunity to improve its chances of a Champions League berth for next season.

On Wednesday it's: Atletico Madrid vs. Xerez, Racing Santander vs. Espanyol, Zaragoza vs. Mallorca, Osasuna vs. Malaga and Barcelona vs. Deportivo La Coruna. On Thursday it's: Almeria vs. Real Madrid and Valencia vs. Athletic Bilbao.
