Van Gaal: No issue with Woodward on transfers

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal played down the club鈥檚 interest in signing Pedro Rodriguez from Barcelona yesterday after the Spanish international decided to join Premier League champion Chelsea instead.

He also defended the club鈥檚 executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who was widely reported to have flown to Barcelona to tie up the deal.

Van Gaal chose to blame the media for exaggerating his interest in Pedro.

鈥淲hen you ask me if Pedro is fitting in the profile, I cannot lie, then I said yes, but I don鈥檛 say I am interested in the player, that鈥檚 the difference,鈥 the Dutchman told a news conference.

鈥淚 think if we want Pedro it was not any problem because there was a (release) clause in his contract. It was the easiest transfer,鈥 he added.

鈥淲hat is written in the newspapers is not true, you cannot know it. Only the players know it and the clubs know it.

鈥淚 have the idea you want to separate Ed Woodward from me. Never. Never. Every day I鈥檓 updated by him and I trust him.鈥

The Dutchman would not comment on speculation linking United with Southampton鈥檚 Senegal forward Sadio Mane, saying that with a squad of 28 players he was not under any pressure to make new signings.

Memphis Depay, recruited before the start of the season, was impressive as United beat Bruges 3-1 in the first leg of its Champions League qualifying round match on Tuesday, giving the Red Devils a third win out of three.

United hosts Newcastle United today, when Van Gaal said David de Gea would again not feature. The goalkeeper has not played this season after the manager said he was not focused because of transfer speculation linking him to Real Madrid in his native Spain.

Meanwhile, Manchester City鈥檚 Argentine full-back Pablo Zabaleta will be out of action for at least a month after injuring a knee in training, the club鈥檚 website reported yesterday.

He could miss up to six games.

鈥淚t happened in training,鈥 Zabaleta confirmed. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the first time in 12 years of senior football that I鈥檝e ever been injured like this so it鈥檚 a blow, especially at the start of the season.鈥

The injury leaves Bacary Sagna as City鈥檚 only senior right-back.

City visits Everton tomorrow.
