Van Gaal hails United spirit

MANCHESTER United manager Louis van Gaal praised the spirit of his side as it scored a late goal to earn an FA Cup quarterfinal replay at West Ham and potentially save the season.
United trailed to a stunning Dimitri Payet strike before Anthony Martial equalized in the 83rd minute to give Van Gaal’s side renewed hope of ending the season with a trophy. “When you have played against West Brom and lost and against Liverpool and lost, to come back like that is amazing,” the Dutchman said. “When you see the spirit of my team it is unbelievable. When you lose a game against Liverpool it runs very deep in the club.
“Then you have to play within two days against a very good team like West Ham, who have been preparing for this game for a week while we had to recover in two days, and found yourselves 1-0 behind. So to come back like that is fantastic.”
In Italy, Napoli cut the gap with Serie A leader Juventus to three points with a 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Palermo, while Roma kept up the pressure on the top two by beating Udinese 2-1.
Gonzalo Higuain converted a penalty for Napoli — his 27th league goal of the season — to ensure his side kept pace with Juventus, which beat Sassuolo 1-0 on Friday.
Roma is third, five points behind Napoli, but leading the chase for the final Champions League spot after bouncing back from elimination from this season’s competition by recording an eighth successive league victory. Fiorentina was held to a 1-1 draw by bottom club Hellas Verona.
AC Milan remains sixth after it drew 0-0 at Chievo Verona.
In Spain, Casemiro scored in the 89th-minute against Las Palmas to earn Real Madrid a 2-1 win in the Spanish league.
Casemiro headed the winner from a corner just two minutes after Las Palmas equalized through striker Willian Jose. Sergio Ramos had put Madrid ahead with another header in the 24th, before being sent off in injury time.
