Ventura for Italy after Euro 2016

GIAMPIERO Ventura will take over as Italy coach after Euro 2016, Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio announced yesterday, Italian media reported.

Former Torino coach Ventura replaces Antonio Conte, who heads for English Premier League giant Chelsea next season, after the European Championships in France from June 10-July 10.

While Conte was a three-time Serie A winner with Juventus, the 68-year-old Ventura has a less impressive coaching CV in his three decades as a manager.

A modest player during his career in the third division, Ventura’s coaching portfolio is equally modest, with no Champions League matches, and having only competed in the Europa League in 2013-2014 with Torino. He joined Torino in 2012, after several forays into Serie A with Cagliari (1998-1999), Sampdoria (2001-2002), Messina (2005-2006) and Bari (2009-2011).

Torino finished 12th in Serie A last season.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Foreign Office has warned fans travelling to France for the Euro 2016 that its venues are “potential targets for terrorist attacks”.

The month-long competition will be held in stadiums across France, which has been repeatedly targeted by Islamist militants.

The England, Wales and Northern Ireland teams are all taking part in the tournament. The Foreign Office website, updated yesterday, advised fans travelling to support them to be vigilant at all times and follow the advise of French authorities.
