Victory for Shenhua as Shandong pays penalty

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua pleased its long-suffering fans with a 1-0 win over Shandong Luneng in the 11th round of the Chinese Super League at Hongkou Football Stadium last night.
It was the team’s first victory in five games. Colombian midfielder Giovanni Moreno scored the only goal on a penalty in the 55th minute as the hosts eased the pressure on head coach Sergio Batista. The Argentine, who took over at the end of March, hugged bench members warmly at the final whistle.
Shandong was the more aggressive side after the kickoff but in-form Shenhua goalkeeper Qiu Shengjiong managed to keep a sheet clean in the first half.
However, Shandong ‘keeper Wang Dalei, who transferred from Shenhua this season, had to swallow a goal by his former teammate Moreno from the penalty spot 10 minutes into the second half, after Cao Yunding went tumbling inside the box.
Shandong was also granted a penalty four minutes later. Argentine midfielder Walter Montillo hit the post though he managed to deceive Qiu, who went in the wrong direction.
None of the three Shanghai teams had tasted victory in the past four CSL rounds.
Defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande managed the full 9 points from Greenland Shenhua (2-1), East Asia (5-0) and Shenxin (1-0) in the past two weeks but lost to city rival Guangzhou R&F 0-1 on Friday.
In other games yesterday, Shenxin drew 2-2 with Greentown in Hangzhou. Guo’an edged 10-man Liaoning Whowin with a late penalty in Beijing.
East Asia faces Guizhou Renhe at Shanghai Stadium today. It still remains the top-ranked local team in the CSL standings, sitting 5th on 16 points. Shenhua is 9th with 13 points while Shenxin ranks 13th on 10 points.
Evergrande and Beijing are joint top, with 27 points.
