Vieira named NYC FC coach
FORMER France international Patrick Vieira has joined New York City FC as head coach on a three-year deal from parent club Manchester City, it was announced on Monday.
Vieira, who had been head of City’s Elite Development Squad and had been talked of as a possible candidate to take the top job at the Etihad, replaces sacked coach Jason Kreis.
It follows a disappointing season in the MLS for New York City, which invested heavily in star names such as Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo yet failed to make the playoffs.
“Patrick’s ability, vision and the respect in which he is held by everyone who works with him, speaks volumes for his character,” New York City FC President Tom Glick said.
Former France and Arsenal captain Vieira, a member of Les Bleus victorious 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000-winning squads said he was looking forward to starting his new job. “This established football set up, together with a passionate and loyal fan base, located in a special city which I know well, makes for an unparalleled opportunity,” he said.
Meanwhile, Italian clubs Sampdoria and Palermo have fired their coaches.
Walter Zenga was released by Sampdoria without an immediate replacement being named, while Palermo fired Giuseppe Iachini and hired Davide Ballardini for the rest of the season.
Former Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella is reportedly in line to take over at Sampdoria.
Sampdoria is 10th in the league following a 0-2 loss at home to league leader Fiorentina on Sunday. Palermo is 12th after beating Chievo Verona 1-0.
It’s the fourth and fifth coaching changes this season in Serie A, with Carpi having fired Fabrizio Castori before rehiring him last week. Also, Roberto Donadoni replaced Delio Rossi at Bologna.
