Villa beats Hull 2-0 in Premier League
GABRIEL Agbonlahor and James Milner fired Aston Villa to a 2-0 victory at Hull yesterday to maintain its slim chance of capturing fourth place in the Premier League and push the home side closer to relegation.
Agbonlahor put Villa ahead in the 13th minute and Milner drove home a 76th minute penalty at the KC Stadium as the visitor climbed one place to sixth in the standings, but still three points behind fourth place Tottenham which has a game in hand.
Hull's 19th defeat of the season keeps the team in 18th place, still three points behind West Ham with only three games to go.
Villa had a big slice of luck when it went ahead, with a clearance by Hull defender Paul McShane striking visiting forward John Carew and rebounding to Agbonlahor who fired into the roof of the net.
Hull should have equalized in the 24th minute, however, with three chances in the same move.
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who later needed lengthy treatment and was taken off with a head injury, saw a shot blocked by goalkeeper Brad Friedel. The ball fell to Kevin Kilbane whose drive was again saved by the American 'keeper. Kilbane's follow up attempt was deflected over the bar by Villa defender James Collins.
Villa doubled its lead when Milner was felled by George Boateng in the area and promptly drove home the penalty.
The result means that the race for fourth place is getting hotter.
Tottenham has 64 points and fifth place Manchester City 62, each from 34 games. Villa has 61 and Liverpool 59 from 35.
At the other end, Hull has 28 points from 35 matches and West Ham, which is currently safe at 17th, has 31. Last place Portsmouth is already guaranteed to go down and 19th place Burnley is also in deep trouble with 27 points from 35 games.
