Villa edges Birmingham to tie Spurs for fourth
ASTON Villa reignited its chances of claiming fourth and its prized place in next season's Champions League with a fiery 1-0 English Premier League victory over neighbor Birmingham City yesterday.
James Milner scored a hotly contested penalty seven minutes from time to give Villa a crucial win and move his side level on points (64) with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, which has a game in hand.
A bustling encounter at Villa Park swung in the home team's favor when Roger Johnson was adjudged to have brought down striker Gabriel Agbonlahor as he bore down on goal, although replays showed he got a touch on the ball before the striker was felled.
With England coach Fabio Capello watching from the stands, Milner powered the ball past Joe Hart.
Later, Chelsea had the chance to reclaim the league lead when it entertained Stoke City.
On Saturday, Manchester United beat Tottenham 3-1 to surge two points clear of Chelsea while third-placed Arsenal's championship hopes mathematically ended with a 0-0 stalemate against Manchester City, which is sixth, in London.
Captain Ryan Giggs slotted home two penalties at Old Trafford to pile the pressure on Chelsea, which has three games left, but United may have to play its last two matches without striker Wayne Rooney, who was sidelined with a groin injury.
United, which closes out the season with games at Sunderland and home to Stoke, is chasing an unprecedented fourth straight title.
It has 79 points while Chelsea, which must also play Liverpool and Wigan Athletic, is on 77 with Arsenal cut adrift on 72.
City and Spurs both have three matches left and must still play each other, with the Eastlands club facing a goalkeeping crisis after Shay Given was taken off on a stretcher after dislocating his shoulder.
At the other end of the table, Hull City was resigned to relegation after a 0-1 home defeat by Sunderland while West Ham United beat Wigan 3-2 to move to the brink of safety.
