Villa gives Chelsea the blues

CHELSEA'S defensive frailties were exposed again yesterday when it gifted Aston Villa two goals from corners in a 1-2 away defeat, its second loss in three league games after the Blues had won their first six.

Chelsea, which bounced back from defeat at Wigan Athletic with victory over Liverpool, took the lead when Brad Friedel misjudged a bouncing Didier Drogba shot from the edge of the box.

Villa leveled when a corner skidded off the head of Frank Lampard and allowed Richard Dunne to fling himself forward and head home and even worse defending early in the second half allowed unmarked defender James Collins to head the second from another Ashley Young corner.

Chelsea had chances to equalize but Friedel made up for his early blunder with some solid saves.

The Blues, who led the standings going into yesterday's games, remain on 21 points. Villa has 16.

Manchester United will hope to take advantage later when a home win over Bolton Wanderers would lift it above Carlo Ancelotti's side.
