Villa sacks Sherwood

ASTON Villa fired manager Tim Sherwood yesterday after eight months in charge of the English Premier League club.

Villa lost 1-2 at home to Swansea City on Saturday, a sixth straight defeat in the league, having not won since the opening day of the season in August against Bournemouth.

The club is in the Premier League relegation zone with only four points from 10 matches.

“The board has monitored the performances closely all season and believes the results on the pitch were simply not good enough and that a change is imperative,” Villa said in a statement.

“The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Tim for all his efforts during a difficult period last season and for the many positive contributions he has made to the entire football setup.”

Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert as manager in February when the club dropped into the relegation zone. But he led Villa to safety with a 17th-place finish last season and also guided the team into the final of the FA Cup, before losing 0-4 to Arsenal at Wembley in May.

Sherwood, 46, acknowledged his job was under threat after the loss against Swansea at Villa Park. Swansea rallied to win with a goal in the 87th minute.

Assistant manager Ray Wilkins, first-team coach Mark Robson and performance analyst Seamus Brady have also left.

Kevin MacDonald, who has been coaching the under-21s, was placed in temporary charge.

Villa travels to Southampton for a League Cup match on Wednesday, before an away game against Tottenham Hotspur in the league on November 2.

Possible contenders to replace Sherwood include former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who was fired earlier in October.
