Villarreal salvages late draw at Gijon
VILLARREAL fluffed a chance to keep pace with leader Real Madrid and second-placed Barcelona when it needed a late penalty to salvage a scrappy 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon in La Liga on Sunday.
Diego Castro opened the scoring for Gijon from the penalty spot in the 69th minute, with Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi, who had missed a good chance for an equalizer a few minutes earlier, making no mistake from the spot in added time.
Real and Barca won on Saturday to move up to 23 and 22 points, respectively, with nine matches played and the wealthy pair are already beginning to look like leaving their much poorer rivals trailing.
Villarreal stays third on 20 points, while Valencia, which was held 1-1 at home by bottom club Real Zaragoza on Saturday, is fourth on 17.
Atletico Madrid had Diego Forlan back for Almeria's visit to the Calderon but the Uruguay striker was unable to get on the scoresheet for the Europa League champion as it was held 1-1 with Pablo Piatti's goal canceling out Sergio Aguero's opener.
Atletico, which plays city neighbor Real at the Bernabeu this weekend, is sixth on 14, one behind Espanyol which lost 0-3 at Deportivo la Coruna earlier on Sunday.
In Italy, Lazio moved four points clear of Inter Milan at the top of Serie A after a narrow 1-0 win at Palermo on Sunday, its fourth away victory in a row. Defender Andre Dias scored against the run of play with a superb volley from a free kick after 27 minutes.
Sampdoria also won 1-0 away at Cesena with a last-gasp goal but dropped talisman Antonio Cassano after he swore at the club president last week.
"We still lack 18 points to reach the famous 40 mark and maybe safety (from relegation), and once we reach that we'll see," Lazio's cautious coach, Edy Reja, told Sky.
