Villarreal scores late winner

Ikechuwku Uche’s stoppage-time goal propelled Villarreal to a 1-0 victory at Elche on Monday and into fourth place in the Spanish league.

Bruno Soriano miss-hit a pass into the area but the loose ball rolled to Uche inside the box to score the 90th-minute winner in a matchup of Mediterranean coast clubs at the Martinez Valero Stadium.

Villarreal’s victory came at a cost, however, as Mexico striker Giovani Dos Santos limped off with a leg injury at the start of the second half. Mexico faces New Zealand in a World Cup qualifying playoff later this month.

Bologna scrapes out draw

After 12 rounds, Barcelona leads the Spanish standings with 34 points, one point clear of Atletico Madrid and six ahead of third place Real Madrid.

Newly promoted Villarreal has 23 points on the season.

In Italy, Bologna and Chievo Verona played out a 0-0 draw in Serie A on Monday.

There was hardly any shots on target as Bologna, searching for a third successive victory, was frustrated by a Chievo lineup keen to avoid a seventh consecutive defeat.

Chievo defender Gennaro Sardo went close in the third minute with a powerful strike that went narrowly past the left upright.

Bologna’s best chance came when Jonathan Cristaldo headed Alessandro Diamanti’s cross just wide of the left post.

Christian Puggioni almost gifted Bologna the lead 12 minutes from time when he failed to hold Davide Moscardelli’s shot, but Panagiotis Kone only managed a weak shot and the Chievo goalkeeper was able to save the second attempt.

Chievo remains bottom of the standings, five points behind Bologna.
