Villas-Boas to succeed Sven at SIPG
FORMER Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is set to replace Sven-Goran Eriksson as head coach of Shanghai SIPG.
The 39-year-old Portuguese was reported to have signed a contract with the Chinese Super League side yesterday, with the club scheduled to make an official announcement at a press conference today.
SIPG finished third in the 2016 CSL, completing its goal of winning a spot in next year’s AFC Champions League. It also advanced to the quarterfinals in its debut Asian season. Swede Eriksson had hoped for a contract extension before the end of the season but the club had other ideas. AVB is said to have been recommended by the team’s Brazil striker Hulk.
Nicknamed “Mourinho Junior” among Chinese fans after fellow Portuguese Jose Mourinho, AVB led Portugal’s Porto to an undefeated 2010-11 season, winning four trophies and becoming the youngest manager to win a European title. He coached Chelsea the next year before joining Tottenham in 2012. This May, he completed his two-year contract with Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Hulk was a key player in AVB’s squads during his stints at Porto and Zenit.
SIPG Group President Chen Xuyuan said after SIPG’s last league match that the club’s achievements in 2016 “met expectations but were not satisfying enough”. Chen said the team could have done better and should bring back a championship for the city.
