Walcott helps Arsenal triumph at Blackburn

THEO Walcott's sparkling early-season form continued yesterday as he scored again in Arsenal's 2-1 English Premier League victory at Blackburn Rovers.

Walcott, who netted a hat-trick in a 6-0 home thrashing of Blackpool last week, looked sharp again and he fired Arsenal ahead with a fine finish after 20 minutes at Ewood Park.

Andrei Arshavin sealed a deserved victory for Arsenal early in the second half after Mame Diouf had leveled for Rovers on his first Premier League start.

Victory put Arsenal top of the table on seven points from three games but champion Chelsea can reclaim first place when it hosts Stoke City later looking to continue its 100 percent start to the new season.

It was Blackburn's second loss running, having opened its campaign with a 1-0 home victory against Everton, but Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce believed his side was hard done by.

"Overall, it was a very good performance for us and a very disappointing no-pointer. Unfortunately we couldn't produce the final ball often enough to score more goals."

In Germany, promoted Kaiserslautern stunned champion Bayern Munich with two goals in 60 seconds to win 2-0 on Friday to go top of the Bundesliga with six points from two games.

The host, playing in front of a sellout 49,780 crowd, struck against the run of play when Croatian midfielder Ivo Ilicevic hammered a brilliant shot from 20 meters in the 36th minute.

Second caution

A minute later Ilicevic, who was sent off near the end for a second caution, turned provider to set up countryman Srdan Lakic who slotted his third goal in two matches.

Bayern, which won its opening game of the season, desperately tried to claw its way back in the second period but squandered half a dozen chances mainly through former Kaiserslautern striker Miroslav Klose, Ivica Olic and Toni Kroos.

The match marked the first time Bayern had failed to score in 24 matches dating back to last season.

Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid gave new Inter Milan coach Rafa Benitez plenty to think about when it deservedly beat the Champions League winner 2-0 in the European Super Cup at the Stade Louis II in Monaco on Friday.

Goals from Jose Antonio Reyes after 62 minutes and Sergio Aguero after 83 gave the Europa League winner an easier than expected win over the Italians who won the treble last season when they added the Champions League to their domestic double.

Inter also won the Italian Super Cup last week but its hopes of a fifth trophy this year never materialized.

Benitez admitted his new team needed to improve if it wanted to have any hope of repeating last season's successes. "We started the game well with two or three chances and then we lost control. At the end it was too open," Benitez told RAI television.
